Why engineers should care
A manufacturer part number is a purchasing identity. It is not always the engineering requirement.
For many passives and commodity components, a design depends on package, value, tolerance, rating and other constraints rather than one particular brand. Alexandria separates that engineering definition from the supplier-specific MPNs that can satisfy it.

Back the definition with reviewed sources
Published entries are linked to real manufacturer MPNs. Source mappings are verified against the current engineering definition rather than accepted as an unreviewed search result.
03 / SUBSTITUTE
Keep purchasing options open
When more than one verified source satisfies the same Alexandria definition, procurement can change manufacturer without silently changing what the design requires.
04 / INTEGRATE
Carry the definition into design workflows
Alexandria records can include KiCad symbol and footprint metadata, giving the generic component identity a route into CAD libraries as well as sourcing workflows.
How it works
Generic where it should be. Specific where it matters.
The library does not pretend every component is interchangeable. Each family has its own engineering definition, and only real source parts verified against that definition are exposed as approved mappings.
Search the requirement
Find an Alexandria number by family, package, value, description or the generic number itself.
Read the definition
See the controlled properties and revision that define what must remain true for that generic part.
Review real sources
Inspect the manufacturer MPNs that have been verified against the published definition.
Use the generic identity
Reference the engineering requirement in your design while retaining verified supplier choices underneath it.
A different layer of component data
Alexandria does not replace manufacturer MPNs. It sits above them.
The Alexandria Component Library is deliberately separate from The Component Club product catalogue. One describes a reusable engineering requirement; the other describes specific commercial components and product releases.
